Chapter Text His smirk stretches across his face in a gruesome slash that often causes fear to rise in his victims, and instead of knocking on the door before him he slams it down with the force of his mind.
He is not expecting what he finds. He does not need to step inside the mind, because once the front doors crash down he is inside and his legs are knee deep in trenches of blood. ” the boy’s voice purrs in his ear, and Gin is suddenly awash in fear he has never once felt. The Sentinel is making him feel fear?!
“ It seems I have an unwelcome guest. ” Gin bares his teeth, trying to keep the terror that is seeping into his veins from affecting his mind. He’d had no idea that this would be what he would find when he entered the boy’s mind.
It is a dimension straight from hell that is littered with bodies, intact and not; blood splattered along the walls almost haphazardly and a carpet of it that reaches to his knees, the sloshing sound it makes against his legs sparking more unfamiliar disgust to fire off in his synapses. They’d found decisive evidence that the boy from that ridiculous Detective Agency was collaborating with the FBI, and they’d known they’d have to take him out. But the orders from higher-up- from Anokata- were clear: find out what he knows- what they know. It had never been a problem, and upon discovering that the boy was an impossible Child Sentinel had made the task seem all-the-more-easy. Sentinels were inherently subservient to Guides, and Gin, as a Rank A Guide, would tear the boy’s mind apart to find out what he knew. Of course he’d had to remove the boy and bring him to a more isolated location, and though that hadn’t gone quite as well as he’d hoped thanks to Vodka’s fumbling, it had worked out in the end.
They simply had taken two children instead of one. The girl in the red hoodie would make a fair hostage in order to get the boy to talk if he somehow eeled his way out of responding to Gin. Sentinels were designed to Protect, after all. But as the doors he’d knocked down suddenly right themselves and slam close behind him, the alien distress filling his nerves, he wonders if it will really be as simple as he’d thought. “ You thought it would be easy? ” the Sentinel sneers, vibrating in his mind. “ Sentinels are not the pushovers you seem to think we are, Gin.'
Of course they are. Wait- how does the boy know his name?
Is that something he’d learned from the FBI? From Akai Shuuichi, perhaps? He prods at the thought, waiting for it to unravel itself into a viewable memory, but then his fingers are caught in the sensation of a door slamming shut on them. “ Stop that, ” the boy says in irritation, almost off-hand. “ And you’re saying that hurt? Do you know what makes a Sentinel Level 5, Gin?
” Of course, he thinks in irritation, paranoia crawling into him as he tries to take a step through the lake of blood, Levels are defined by how many senses a Sentinel has amplified. “ Of course, ” the boy mocks him, the voice coming from all around him now, as if he is inside the boy’s mind. Which he is, he supposes. “ Tell me, Gin. Have you ever wondered how it feels to be a Level 5 Sentinel? ” He doesn’t get a chance to respond. He is suddenly not wearing boots or socks, and the warm, disgusting feel of blood sinks between his toes.
It feels oily, wet, heated in a way that tells him it has just come from a human body. Another sense cranks up against his will, and he can taste the iron in the back of his mouth.
It invades him, slides down his throat even though he has not swallowed. He registers a gloop ing noise that sounds much too loud and focuses on the thin film at the top layer of the red dripping down the walls to join the pool, blood already separating as it dries onto him.
The red is staining his hair, surrounding him in it’s essence. “ But you know,' the voice breaks in, making him twist to see the source. He barely avoids losing his footing. “ It’s not only blood that we face on a daily basis.
” The stench of rotting corpses fills his nose, revulsion filling his pores and making him gag. A gritty layer of powder suddenly covers his bare hands, coating his arms up to his elbows.
And then he hears familiar voices screaming, making his ears bleed with how they twist and writhe inside his eardrums. The amplified terror touches his mind with this as he thinks, how does the boy know these voices? Faint surprise brushes him from the edge of the room, then a voice that should not exist anymore cackles in his ear. “ I’d heard that you tend to forget the faces of your victims, Gin.
” The old man's voice announces itself from out of the darkness as flames crackle to life around him, the lake of blood disappearing as he is surrounded by heated fire and the stench and taste of alcohol and gunpowder and blood. “ I just couldn’t believe it. After all, if you look past the surface idea that we weren’t important enough to register to you, it would mean you regretted us or such. ” Pisco’s voice is replaced by a younger voice, still male, but more arrogant.
An utterly unforgettable voice, “ What is it, Gin? Do you harbor some sort of fear of ghosts somewhere inside you?
” Akai Shuuichi’s voice laughs at him as Gin feels the burn of the bullet grazing his cheekbone, and he feels the cold night air seep into his bones as he watches from a mile away as Kir shoots Akai in the head. And yet the man turns to smirk at him with blood on his lips and opens his mouth to say, “ Should I try to weed it out? ” “ Like you weeded me out? ” whispers into his ear. A feminine voice. A woman’s voice, as the salt of the sea surrounds him, and his old glee entwines with horror to make some hybrid emotion waft through him. Even when he pulls the trigger- he is the one who feels the burn of a bullet bury itself into his gut as he falls to his knees at the docks, and Miyano Akemi’s heels click against the cement as she makes her way towards him.
She tilts his chin up to look him in the eye, her nails digging into the skin of his jaw, as the hot blood drips from the corner of her mouth onto his cheek. “ You couldn’t even check my body for that locker key, could you? You made Vodka frisk me for it even though I was still alive and breathing. Maybe if you’d grit your teeth and born it you wouldn’t have been left with an empty locker while the police recovered that billion yen. Maybe if you’d been smarter about the way you handled me you wouldn’t have lost Shiho. ” Then the docks disappear along with the smell of the sea and her brown eyes fade from his vision as a roar deafens him, the sound coming from above him.
The scent of cotton candy and popcorn and mechanical oil permeates the air, along with the stench of the all-too-familiar blood. He feels his hand clench around one of the Apotoxin pills, crushing it into a powder between his fingers; he sees a vaguely familiar teenage boy standing in front of him, blue eyes piercing into his, hands tucked deep into his pockets. The boy sighs. “ Not the same reaction, huh? ” His voice is double-layered: a teenager’s voice and the boy’s - “ Disappointing, but I can’t say it surprises me much.
Doesn’t matter much either, anyway. ” His eyes rise again to spear Gin through, freezing him in place. If he remembers correctly- “ Maybe if you’d remembered me, thought to check to see if I was alive, then this never would’ve happened. I’ve certainly made you regret forgetting me, whether you realize it yet or not. ” The teenager- Kudou Shinichi- takes a step toward him, and suddenly a metal bat comes down from behind Gin and caves his skull in.
He falls forward onto his face, the taste of dirt invading his mouth, and the boy’s hand tangles itself into his hair to wrench his head up. “ Did you honestly think you would win? ” The question is curious.
“ Have you only ever entered Neutral minds, or were the Sentinel minds just low-leveled? Stepping into our minds is stepping into our territory, and if we’re not completely overwhelmed by terror at the thought of you then you’re the one that’s at a disadvantage, ” a pause, and then the hand shakes his head slightly from side to side. “ Or is that it? Did you think we’d be incapacitated by fear? I think you forgot something in all your confidence, Gin.
Sentinels protect. And I’ve been fighting you this whole time. ” A knock-knock breaks the boy’s stride, and they both turn to look at the solid metal door that has appeared in the middle of the grass. “ Ah, ” Kudou says and straightens up, fingers still clenched in Gin’s hair, “ I nearly forgot. She gets to show you what happens next.
” Miyano Akemi appears incongruously in the middle of the grass next to the door, and Gin can’t see her eyes through the glare of light reflecting off the fake glasses she’d been wearing when she died. Her hand reaches out to clench around the door handle and she heaves it open: a white light emanates from the now-open door, blinding Gin, and the smell of antiseptic and the stench of rotting lemons gags him.
The screaming of rats fills the air. Gin blinks and he is no longer in the grassy backside of the amusement park- he is laying flat on a table in a room that is as familiar as the young woman in a lab coat staring down at him from next to his head. Sherry, he tries to hiss, trying to overwhelm her with fear and incapacitate her with it as he has so often before. She flinches back slightly, and he almost grins in triumph once more when he feels a strap tighten around his neck.
He looks to the other side and comes face to face with the little girl in the red hoodie. He hadn’t been able to see what she looked like since she’d kept her face down, but he hadn’t spared a thought towards her appearance. He finds he was wrong to have done so. Sherry, an extremely young Sherry, stares down her nose at him in contempt even though she is barely tall enough to clear the operating table.
She tightens a strap around his wrist and he finally realizes he is now strapped down completely to the table he lies on. “ Fancy seeing you here, Gin. ” Sherry voice is like Kudou’s, with an echo of a child speaking as she herself does. The small Sherry disappears as the actual Sherry pretends to look down at her clipboard.
She glances up, “ Looks like you’ve been slated for being a lab rat for the Apotoxin’s experimental stage. Maybe you shouldn’t have pushed for human test subjects so much, Gin. If you hadn’t, well, I have to wonder if I’d be able to do this. ” She is suddenly holding a pill and a vial of liquid where a clipboard had been.
She smirks, “ Any last words? ” She does not let him speak before shoving the pill down his throat. Before he can spit it out she dumps the liquid into his mouth and clamps his mouth shut with her free hand, the one still holding the vial pinching his nose closed. He has no choice.
He swallows the pill. Gin never wakes up. Notes: Gin’s Guide Power is(was lol) Fear Inducement. That’s why he’s used to having little to no resistance from anyone. Also why he managed to get the drop on Shinichi at the amusement park, because a Level 5 Sentinel would’ve heard him coming and all that.
Shinichi was paralyzed with fear, so he couldn’t avoid the bludgeon. The /problem/ with Gin’s power, though I’m not sure he ever figured it out, is OverExposure. If he uses his power on a single person too often, the fear weakens with each use. Haibara, who grew up in the Organization, is actually a little bit more sensitive to fear, which is why she’s always scared stiff whenever Gin’s near.
But in the safety of her own mind she can overwhelm his mental attack. Shinichi uses a mix of that OverExposure and his ridiculous mental fortitude to overcome the majority of Gin’s Fear Inducement, and since they /are/ in his head, as stated: he has the edge. And in this one Sentinels who are close emotionally with each other can basically connect their headspaces is what that was.
